We have the worst luck with cars. The car just got fixed last week, and I recently replaced the stereo after it was broken for a full year.

And we just discovered that someone broke into our building's secure parking garage (or more likely followed some inconsiderate person in who didn't pay attention) and smashed the car window and stole the brand new $400 stereo, a traffic monitor device we'd been testing, and about $500 worth of Allyson's CDs.

Filed the police report and gave the serial number of the stereo, but I don't expect we'll see any of that stuff again. I'm so angry right now I can hardly say.

Damn! A secure garage, even! Assholes.

I've lived a couple secure-garage places and it drives me crazy when people do stupid shit like prop open the door or let people in or hold the garage door open. It's like, dude, the sort of defeats the purpose of a SECURE garage.

Idea for possible cheap window replacement: Get a window out of a junkyard and either replace yourself or pay someone else to do it. The cost of the window will be way cheaper (some junkyards even have cheap mechanics who will do that stuff for you).

Any chance you can contact the manufacturer of the traffic device and see if they can track it down for you? Sometimes they have 2-way communication...

Dude, that is amazingly lame. I had my stereo stolen a short while ago, but considering the neighborhood I'm in, the only surprise was that it wasn't stolen a lot sooner. In a secure building? Someone needs a beatdown for letting the assholes in. Assuming the asshole isn't a resident, or related to one.

Were there security cameras?

Nope -- and there's an ongoing argument about that.
