steampunk

I want to start a steampunk band some day.

I'm thinking lots of weird old mechanical instruments (old automatic pianos, drum machines, etc) and drawn-out, haunting guitar distortions. Mix it with weird atmospherics and synth effects, throw in some gypsy violin, and give it a 4/4 time waltz rhythm. Make it the sort of music one wants to dance to in a blasted candlelit cathedral with a woman long of hair, dress, and fang. Take it in more civilized directions, too; the soundtrack of an elegantly debauched hellfire club...

Make it elegant. Make it seductive. Make it hypnotic, beautiful and strange. I can hear it in my mind but I don't know how to express it. I hate that.

see, i desperately want to express the thought/image/sound of this music in my head. but:

1) i don't know a single damn thing about music
2) i don't know how to play an instrument
3) i have no formal voice training

all i have is this sound in my head, and i don't know where to begin.

stars above. well, at least i can write lyrics.

...help is certainly welcome, those of you who have gone forth and said "i can help write music/sing/play instruments".

i want to sit down with some instruments, sampling equipment, synthesizers and computers and just screw around. but i don't have the time or the money.

anyone see a solution to all this? feel free to jump in. i'm totally in love with this idea and by gods, i want to make it happen.
