counterintelligence
Mar. 6th, 2002 12:20 pmSlashdot had a story this morning on a new method of spying -- some security experts have created a device that can reconstruct your network traffic by reading the flashing of the status lights on your hub, router or modem!
...Now, of course, these lights are very rarely useful, although they are pretty. One can simply put a cover over them...
...or one can get creative. Here are a few ideas a friend of mine and I came up with:
* Remove your status lights.
* Switch the TX/RX lights on your modem ("Sir, he seems to be sending packets... BACKWARDS!")
* Rig your lights to blink randomly, or in predetermined patterns. ("Sir, his lights are transmitting VNV Nation lyrics over and over and over again...")
* New-model network-enabled cellular phones will have IP addresses. For extra points: "Sir, he's sending DoS signals to... your phone!" "Oh... so that's why I couldn't check my voicemail."
