Proxima: Chapter One

I invented the Proxima universe a long, long time ago -- a decade or more. I've been trying for exactly that long to write the first chapter of the series of novels I have planned. I've written bits that come later, and bits that come earlier, but never that first fateful chapter. Until, perhaps, now. The setting is Earth, 2006 AD, a world quite similar to our own, with a few changes here and there. The protagonists, Mark Huntley and Kira Weatheral, are design engineers for the megacorporation known as United AeroSpace, born out of the privatization of NASA. Here's what I have so far.
