slipstream literature
Jul. 29th, 2002 12:44 pm...Ever notice how the best new SF and fantasy these days seems to blur the line between the two?
I've been reading Perdido Street Station by China Mieville. He may be a damned Socialist*, but I'm willing to forgive that for quality writing and a good imagination.
* Socialists, Communists and so on annoy me intensely, if only for the fact that the idea of giving The Masses as a whole any kind of power scares the bejeezus out of me. Have you SEEN how stupid people become when they're in a herd? Have you noticed how many more stupid people there are than there are smart people?
There's also the unnerving ease which even a small-scale commune tends to revert to a totalitarian regime or personality cult... and as for Socialism, well, I like to decide how my money is spent, thankyouverymuch. 60% taxes do not a happy Bjorn make, I don't care how good your health care system is.
