this is a hell of a lot more upbeat than the post i wanted to make this morning

You would not believe the massive emotional upheaval, reexamination of priorities and self-exhamination going through my head.

I'm pretty sure I'll be the better for it, but it's not fun at all.

Yes, I'm okay. Most of the time.

But sometimes I go down really far. I don't think I've ever been down that far. But I'm far too grounded to do anything stupid.

Thank you all for being there. Your words and actions of support have meant a great deal to me. I'm sorry I haven't been in touch with most of you to let you know I'm OK... I've been keeping away from the phone and the Net, trying to think a few things through on my own. I've had a lot to think about.

But I'm putting my life back together, with some new goals (and most of the old ones, not to worry), and getting on with things.

(If I downswing later, don't worry too much... though I may beg for advice as I pass through crisis.)

Regardless, let me say two things. First, that I can only attempt to sympathize with the horrible sequence of events you've recently been through, and that if you manage to stay well (or well enough, as it may be) throughout it, you are a remarkable person.

Second, let me say that I've been seeing your user icon randomly for the last month, and only just 4 minutes ago did I realize that it was a phoenix of some sort, and not (as I had so firmly convinced myself) a black and white image of an ear with a shiny ear-stud at the top. I don't know if you're the sort to find that amusing, but I figured it was worth a shot.

I appreciate your sympathy, and the vote of confidence. This is not easy. This has to be the not-easiest thing I've ever endured. But I seem to be weathering it OK, despite... everything. I've had a legion of people -- friends and acquaintances -- reaching out to me, and my parents have been supportive as well. So that's helped a lot. And Selena and I have tried to be there for each other in the ways that we can, now, though that hasn't been without its troubles. But we've been working through it all, one day at a time. She's still very important to me.

As for my bird-and-star -- that *is* amusing, though I must say that you're the first person who has told me it look like an ear. The idea was that it was a swan -- a creature known for grace and beauty -- embracing the stars. I designed it a long time ago, and a girl who liked my writing did it up properly with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. It ties in with a series of SF novels I want to write one day... but that's another story. :)
