When my eyes were younger, I could do that with "fixed". Then I had to move up to "10x20". But now I use neep-alt-24, just because it's so readable and cool in emacs.

Put something like this in your .Xresources file

Emacs*Font: neep-alt-24
Emacs*Foreground: yellow
Emacs*Background: midnight blue
Emacs.geometry: 80x25


There are other ways as well. The syntax highlighting you are already using can be configured with fonts as well as with colors, and there is the set-default-font you can put in your .emacs file
